Free Speech - Video

I am a strong proponent of "free speech." But this works both ways - protesters have a right to protest, but when the person they are protesting begins to speak, that person also has a right to be heard. I think the point of this video is to chastise President Bush, but in this case I don't believe he did anything wrong.

Protest vocally up to the point that your protests interfere with another person's right to free speech. Sort of like the old adage of the sixties - your right to swing your fist around in the air ends at the point of my nose.

Bushism - Don't Ask

Boehner Wants Protection From Illegal Wiretapping - But Only For Himself

Chris Frates at the Politico reveals how Republican Leader John Boehner is seeking wiretap protection for himself, but not for ordinary Americans : When a federal judge ordered Rep. Jim McDermott to pay House Minority Leader John A. Boehner and his attorneys more than $1 million in damages and legal fees for leaking an illegally taped phone call to the media, Boehner said he pursued the case because "no one - including members of Congress - is above the law."

Why, then, is the Ohio Republican trying to squash similar lawsuits against telecommunications companies who cooperated with the government in warrantless electronic surveillance, ask the attorneys behind the class action suits.

The blatant hypocrisy on display here is stunning.

When ordinary Americans were being wiretapped, Boehner attacked them and their right to privacy, claiming "I believe (phone companies) deserve immunity " from the law. But when Boehner himself was being wiretapped, he had no hesitation to claim his own right to privacy, claiming "no one is above the law."

ABCs of the Bible - Link

When I was a child attending a Chirstian church, we spent a lot of time learning about the love of Jesus (Jesus Loves Me This I Know) and about the need for us to love our fellow humans (Do unto others as you would have them do unto you). As an adult I've learned that others read hate, distrust and killing into the Bible. It explains a lot about the right-wing Christians who support, even demand, that we be involved in wars against the heathens with religious beliefs different from Christianity.

Ruth Hurmence Green has compiled some ABC's from the Bible that explain some of the human horrors found in the Holy Book of Christianity. Here are a few for you to sample...

Asking your neighbors to help you stone a stubborn son to death. Deut. 21:18-21

Beating slaves to death in stages Ex. 21:20-21

Chopping off heads, hands, feet, ears and plucking out eyes Matt. 18:8-9
John 18:10 Num. 25:9 Matt. 14:10 II Sam. 4:7, 12

Delivering people up to the torturer Matt. 18:34-35 Matt. 13:41-42

Another conservative talks big but won't back up his words with actions...

From the NY Times (free registration probably required)

T. Boone Pickens is not giving up his million dollars.

That’s how much he had offered to pay anyone who could disprove any of the accusations the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth made against Senator John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election – attacks Mr. Pickens, the billionaire Texas oilman,
helped finance.

A group of Swift boat veterans sympathetic to Mr. Kerry sent Mr. Pickens a letter last week taking him up on the challenge. In 12 pages, plus a 42-page attachment of military records and other documents, they identified not just one but ten lies in the group’s campaign against Mr. Kerry. They offered to meet with him to provide Mr. Kerry’s journals and videotapes from Vietnam and a copy of his full military record certified by the Navy – a key demand of Mr. Pickens and veterans who believe Mr. Kerry lied about his service to win his military decorations.

Mr. Pickens replied with a one-page letter, thanking the veterans for their research and their service, but politely saying there had been a misunderstanding. “Key aspects of my offer of $1 million have not been accurately reported,” he wrote.

Senator and presidential candidate Barack Obama is making noises like a conservative. I'm not wealthy so I don't usually donate substantial sums of money, but the following has cost him any contributions from me. Remember separation of church and state? This doesn't cut it.

From Air America...

Reaching out to evangelical voters, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is announcing plans to expand President Bush's program steering federal social service dollars to religious groups and — in a move sure to cause controversy — support some ability to hire and fire based on faith.

Video - Hidden Story of Jesus

It is extrememly unlikely that the Bible is the word of God - it is conflicted and twisted beyond description. Not only that - it is not unique - it is the retelling of stories from other religions. Here's a documentary detailing how some (at least) of the stories surrounding Jesus got their start. The running time on this video is 1 hour 43 minutes.

The old Bible teaching, "Turn the ohter cheek" is out and a new verse is now popular, "Shoot to kill." I love the way any Christian can read into the Bible whatever they want.

Fifteen years ago, Christian missionary Charl van Wyk viewed it as his duty to pull a handgun and shoot back when terrorists who had made plans for a sanctuary massacre attacked worshippers in St. James Church in South Africa. He says it still is a Christian's duty to defend the innocent.

Big-Business or the People?

As a certified liberal with my political beliefs formed in my formative years - a liberal church that taught that the Golden Rule was the most important lesson to be taken from the Bible - and a stint as a young-man facing the draft during the Vietnam War era - I simply do not understand those that put selfish interests and big-business above the needs of people. But those people are out there - forming their political beliefs in some other fashion - believing that ensuring the survival and success of big business at the expense of mankind is of paramount importance.

An article in the Washington Post recently highlights the issues that support for wealth and big business raise...

More than 900 cases alleging that government contractors and drugmakers have defrauded taxpayers out of billions of dollars are languishing in a backlog that has built up over the past decade because the Justice Department cannot keep pace with the surge in charges brought by whistle-blowers, according to lawyers involved in the disputes.

The issue is drawing renewed interest among lawmakers and nonprofit groups because many of the cases involve the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, rising health-care payouts, and privatization of government functions -- all of which offer rich new opportunities to swindle taxpayers.

Republicans are having a hard time getting their act together for the upcoming elections. Will they be able to win as a party if they are all running independently? This could be an interesting November...

From Thehill.com

At least 14 Republican members of Congress have refused to endorse or publicly support Sen. John McCain for president, and more than a dozen others declined to answer whether they back the Arizona senator.

Many of the recalcitrant GOP members declined to detail their reasons for withholding support, but Rep. John Peterson (R-Pa.) expressed major concerns about McCain’s energy policies and Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) cited the Iraq war.

Frequent readers here know of my disdain for organized religion. I have no problem that people want to believe in these fantasies - but I do get upset when they wish to impose their religious values on the rest of us. In particular I find fault with Christianity (I was raised in the religion so I know more about it). Not only is the Bible based on a fairy tale, but it is a bad fairy tale to boot. Note the following as one of hundreds of good questions from The Sketpic's Annotated Bible...

(1:3-5, 14-19) "Let there be light"God creates light and separates light from darkness, and day from night, on the first day. Yet he didn't make the light producing objects (the sun and the stars) until the fourth day (1:14-19). And how could there be "the evening and the morning" on the first day if there was no sun to mark them?

Pious Jerks - Number 2,876,344

I have said it over and over again - too often the religious (and the conservative) hide their criminal behavior behind their statements of piousness. They push some preconceived notions of morality on everyone else while they practice the most perverse sorts of behavior out of the eyes of their constituency. Sometimes I think that guys like this one should get DOUBLE the jail sentence because of the hypocrisy.

THE FLESH WAS WEAK: Yet again, a man has been arrested for soliciting sex with an underage girl, only to find that the object of his lust was an undercover police officer. In this case, police say, Joe Barron, 52, drove his wife's car from Plano, Texas, to Bryan with a box of condoms to meet the "13- year-old" girl after "weeks" of "sexually explicit" chats online and via cell phone. Officers arrested Barron, who immediately broke into tears and "said he was feeling guilt and shame and grief," a Bryan police spokesman said. Barron now faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, and has been asked to resign from his job -- as a minister at the Prestonwood Baptist Church, a "megachurch" in Plano that's so large, its 140-acre campus is known to more profane locals as "Six Flags Over Jesus". After his release on bail, police searched Barron's computer and found he was courting other teens, and arrested him again on six more charges. (Dallas Morning News) ...Pastoral tip No. 641: When trying to "save wayward girls," don't try to save them all for yourself.

Fox News follows the Republican party line, and the newscasters on that network love to trash-talk anyone or anything that does not fit the party-think. Here's a site that points out just some of the slurs that they have forwarded on Barack Obama.

Hateful fear-mongering neo-fascist moron Michelle Malkin—who we thought had given up on Fox after her beef with Geraldo?—popped up the other day to abuse Michelle Obama. The on-screen chyron, inexplicably, referred to the candidate's wife as "Obama's Baby Mama." Because he's black, and that is a term black people use, you see. Because they have so many children out of wedlock... unlike the Obamas....
Really, it makes absolutely no fucking sense. Whatever.
