Keep Your Enemies Closer?

In order to wage his war on terror, President Bush has formed some very unusual alliances. None is more troubling than our pact with Pakistan to fight the Taliban.

Pakistan is a Muslim nuclear power. They have forged conflicting agreements with the U.S. and with extremist groups pledging Jihad against us. They have been the home for the organization of terrorist attacks in London, both the bombing of the subways and the planned attacks aboard airliners bound for the U.S.

And still we pamper the leadership in Pakistan. Now, ABC News announces a pact that Pakistan has signed with the Taliban to allow them to make their home in the mountains bordering Afghanistan in Western part of the country, to be untouched by the Pakistani Army. Even bin Laden is to be given free reign as he travels about.

President Bush needs to reexamine this relationship.
